The
Jericho Harmonics/Singing For Peace Project
|
|
|
Imagine the power of determined voices
crumbling the walls of power, penetrating the halls of influence, and
breaking down division among people and nations?
This is the vision of the Jericho Harmonics/Singing For Peace Project, a vision that is being enacted right now, through the Singing For Peace gatherings at Bay Area BART stations, and rallies, demonstrations, vigils and concerts, and through the national networking of the Jericho Harmonics Project. |
The power of song and community singing
to energize and activate people is without parallel. In times
of extended social decay, governmental corruption and global
violence, the human spirit is our most vital resource, and preserving
our inner light, vision and faith is our first
responsibility. |
|
This vision of
communities of people singing their beliefs in public is rooted in a
long tradition--spanning the labor movement, civil rights movement, and
non violent movements in other countries. Singing For Peace is a
loosely knit and ever expanding group of singers who gather weekly at
BART stations throughout the Bay Area, bringing a healing and
enlivening energy to those who participate, and those who hear. All
voices, all ages are welcome to come sing. There are no rehearsals, no
performances, and lots of community, warmth and inspiration. Lyrics to
our peace songbook and audio clips of each song are available on our
website, www.betsyrosemusic.org, and through Singing For Peace. Song
leaders anywhere can download and use this material. |

The Jericho Harmonics Project focuses on national and international networking with singers, musicians, and websites around the country to activate and spread this model of ongoing, public community singing for peace far and wide. We seek to empower and inspire musicians and activists around the globe to give music and song a central role in peacemaking. The Jericho Harmonics Project is committed to connecting and energizing the artists who in turn will be instigators and sustainers for community creative expression and healing. |

Project founder and director Betsy Rose has long been a musical voice within both spiritual communities and progressive organizations for many years. During the first gulf war, she joined, with other area musicians to organize a peace choir that sang at anti-war rallies and marches and at the Berkeley Community Theater with Pete Seeger. She has worked with closely with Vietnamese Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh, writing songs based on his poetry and teachings. After 9/11, she gathered together groups to sing for peace at the downtown Berkeley BART on a weekly basis; after Congress abdicated it’s constitutional responsibility to decide on matters of war in October, 2002, the group re-formed as Singing For Peace, and began its current mission singing for commuters around the Bay Area. |
